The central nervous system: brain and spinal cord sheet
5-mark answer frame

Draw a labelled diagram of the human brain. Describe the jobs of the cerebrum, cerebellum and medulla oblongata, and explain how the brain is protected.

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Define in one line. The brain is the main control centre of the body; with the spinal cord it forms the central nervous system.
  2. 2 · Cerebrum. The largest part, in two hemispheres, with gray matter outside; intelligence, memory, reasoning and voluntary actions.
  3. 3 · Cerebellum. Below the cerebrum at the back; keeps balance and coordinates muscles.
  4. 4 · Medulla oblongata. The lowest part, continuing as the spinal cord; controls heartbeat, breathing and peristalsis.
  5. 5 · Protection. The skull (cranium), three meninges (dura mater, arachnoid, pia mater) and cerebrospinal fluid as a cushion.
  6. 6 · Draw the brain. [Diagram: cerebrum, cerebellum, medulla oblongata, spinal cord, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, skull, meninges]
  7. 7 · Link to daily life. A helmet on a two-wheeler adds one more layer of protection to the skull.
  8. 8 · Close in one line. So each part of the brain has its own job, and together they control the whole body.

Scoring tip: Keep the cerebrum and the cerebellum clearly apart in your diagram and your answer; mixing them up is the commonest slip.
