Reproduction, and asexual reproduction by fission, budding and spores sheet3-mark answer frameWhat is reproduction? Explain binary fission and budding, with one example and a labelled diagram of each.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
- 1 · Define in one line. Reproduction is the biological process by which living things produce young ones of their own kind.
- 2 · Say why it matters. It keeps a species going from one generation to the next.
- 3 · Binary fission. The nucleus divides, then the cytoplasm; one cell becomes two and the parent loses its identity. Example: Amoeba.
- 4 · Budding. A bud grows from the parent, forms its parts and separates. Examples: yeast, Hydra.
- 5 · Draw both. [Diagram: four stages of binary fission in Amoeba; Hydra with a growing bud]
- 6 · Link to daily life. Yeast multiplying by budding makes bread dough rise.
- 7 · Close in one line. So simple organisms make new individuals from a single parent.
Scoring tip: Number the stages in each diagram, and write that the nucleus divides before the cytoplasm.
