How does HIV spread, and how can its spread be prevented? Why should people living with HIV not be discriminated against?
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
1 · Define in one line. HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, weakens the body's defence and leads to AIDS, the Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome.
2 · How it spreads.
Unprotected sex with an infected person.
Infected blood, and shared or unsterilised needles.
From an infected mother to her baby.
3 · Prevention. One faithful partner, correct use of condoms, sterile needles, tested blood, and medical advice for infected pregnant women.
4 · Why no discrimination. HIV does not spread by hugging or by sharing food, toilets or clothes, or through mosquitoes; ART helps people with HIV live healthier lives.
5 · Link to daily life. The red ribbon on World AIDS Day, 1 December, stands for awareness and respect.
6 · Close in one line. So HIV is preventable, and correct information protects everyone.
Scoring tip: Write four routes of spread and four ways to prevent it; a two-column list is quick to mark.
