Wastes and how to manage them sheet
3-mark answer frame

A family's dustbin holds vegetable peels, a plastic bottle, old newspapers, a used battery and tea leaves. Sort these into biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, explain the difference, and suggest three ways the family should handle its waste.

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Biodegradable waste. Broken down by microbes into harmless substances: the vegetable peels, tea leaves and old newspapers.
  2. 2 · Non-biodegradable waste. Not easily broken down, so it lasts long and can harm: the plastic bottle and the used battery.
  3. 3 · Manage it.
    • Separate wet and dry waste at home.
    • Turn wet waste into manure, or cattle dung into biogas.
    • Reduce, reuse, repair and recycle the dry waste.
  4. 4 · Real life. Selling paper, bottles and cans to the kabadiwala is recycling.
  5. 5 · Close in one line. So the best waste is the waste never made.

Scoring tip: Give two examples of each kind; examiners look for correct examples.
