Describe the four seasons of India and their main features.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
1 · Open in one line. India has four seasons, which follow the cycle of the monsoon.
2 · Cold weather season (December to February). Temperature falls from south to north, about 12 to 15 °C in the north. North-east winds are dry; western disturbances give light rain for rabi crops; the Tamil Nadu coast gets rain.
3 · Hot weather season (March to May). Temperatures rise and a low pressure trough forms from Jaisalmer to Odisha. The loo and dust storms blow in the north-west, Kaal Baisakhi strikes West Bengal and mango showers fall in Kerala.
4 · Advancing south-west monsoon (June to September). Moist south-west winds reach Kerala in early June and cover India by mid-July, with heavy rain, breaks, floods and droughts.
5 · Retreating monsoon (October and November). The trough weakens and the winds withdraw. October heat grips the plains, and Bay of Bengal cyclones hit Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
6 · Link to farming. Kharif crops follow the monsoon and rabi crops grow in winter.
7 · Close in one line. So the four seasons follow one another in a fixed cycle every year.
Scoring tip: Give the months of each season first, which are easy marks. Then add one weather feature and one local name (loo, Kaal Baisakhi, October heat).
