How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Open in one line. The right to freedom (Articles 19 to 22) protects our liberty so that democracy can work.
  2. 2 · Six freedoms (Article 19). Speech and expression, assembly, associations and unions, movement, residence, and profession, trade or business.
  3. 3 · Reasonable restrictions. Each freedom can be limited for reasons such as the security of India, public order or morality, for example a curfew after violence. Only courts decide what is reasonable.
  4. 4 · Conviction for offences (Article 20). No punishment for an act that was not then a crime, no double punishment, no forced self-witness.
  5. 5 · Life and personal liberty (Article 21). Life and liberty can be taken only by the procedure established by law.
  6. 6 · Arrest and detention (Article 22). Grounds told, lawyer allowed, magistrate within 24 hours; preventive detention reviewed by an Advisory Board within three months.
  7. 7 · Close in one line. So our freedom is wide but not unlimited: it must not harm others or the nation.
