Discuss the role of citizens in making Indian democracy successful.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
1 · Open in one line. In a democracy, citizens are not just the governed: they share the work of governing.
2 · Participation. Vote wisely after hearing all parties and candidates, and join parties or civil society organisations.
3 · Making the system accountable. Watch how leaders use power, and use the RTI Act 2005, the media and peaceful protest such as satyagraha.
4 · Fulfilling obligations. Freedom is never absolute: use your rights without harming the rights of others.
5 · Respect the law and others. Reject violence, respect others' dignity and views, and question decisions without rejecting the government's authority.
6 · Assert and negotiate. Speak up against wrong decisions, and be ready to negotiate, since no group gets everything.
7 · Close in one line. A democracy is as strong as its citizens are active and responsible.
Scoring tip: Use the lesson's three headings, participation, accountability and obligations, and add one example to each.
