1. 1 · Define human development. Development that widens people's choices and well-being, with people at the centre, not just income.
2. 2 · Who gave the idea. Dr Mahbub ul Haq introduced it; Amartya Sen saw it as development that increases freedoms.
3. 3 · The HDI. Developed in 1990 and used by the UNDP in its yearly Human Development Report to rank countries.
4. 4 · Three dimensions. A long and healthy life, knowledge and education, and a decent standard of living.
5. 5 · Close in one line. The HDI shows the quality of life better than income alone.
