Between the wars: the growth of fascism and Nazism sheet
3-mark answer frame

Explain any three causes of the rise of fascism and Nazism after the First World War.

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Open with the event. Between the wars, dictators rose in Italy under Mussolini and in Germany under Hitler.
  2. 2 · Humiliating treaties. Germany was crushed by the Treaty of Versailles, and Italy gained no colonies despite being on the winning side.
  3. 3 · Economic crisis. Unemployment and the Great Depression of 1929 made people look for a strong leader.
  4. 4 · Weak democracy. Governments failed to solve post-war problems, and the League of Nations was helpless.
  5. 5 · Fear of socialism. Kings, nobles and capitalists backed the fascists to stop socialism.
  6. 6 · Close in one line. These dictatorships soon dragged the world into the Second World War.

Scoring tip: Name both leaders and both countries in your opening line; then give exactly three causes.
