Describe the causes and consequences of the Second World War.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
1 · Open with the event. The Second World War (1939 to 1945) caused more death and destruction than any war before it.
2 · Revenge and aggression. Germany sought revenge for Versailles; it took the Rhineland, Austria and Czechoslovakia, while Italy attacked Ethiopia.
3 · Appeasement and alliances. Britain and France gave in at Munich (1938); the Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis united the fascist powers.
4 · Immediate cause. Germany attacked Poland on 1 September 1939, and Britain declared war on 3 September.
5 · Destruction. Millions died; Jews were sent to concentration camps; atomic bombs fell on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
6 · A new world order. Germany was split into four zones and imperialism weakened. The USA and USSR began the Cold War, and the UN was born on 24 October 1945.
7 · Close in one line. The war ended Europe's dominance and gave the world the United Nations.
Scoring tip: Balance the answer: three causes and three consequences. Give the exact date of the attack on Poland.
