How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
- 1 · Open in one line. The Congress had two groups: the moderates (Naram Dal, 1885 to 1905) and the radicals (Garam Dal, 1905 to 1918).
- 2 · Goal. Moderates wanted reforms within British rule; radicals demanded swaraj as a birthright.
- 3 · Methods. Moderates used petitions and speeches within the law; radicals used mass protest, boycott of foreign goods and swadeshi.
- 4 · Support and leaders. Moderates such as Gokhale drew the urban educated; Lal, Bal and Pal drew students, peasants, workers and women.
- 5 · Close in one line. The two groups split in 1907 and came together again at Lucknow in 1916.
Scoring tip: Compare point by point (goal, method, support) rather than describing one group and then the other.
