Distinguish between the western and the eastern coastal plains of India.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
1 · Say what they are. The coastal plains are flat strips of land between the Peninsular Plateau and the sea.
2 · Give their location. The western plain lies along the Arabian Sea from the Rann of Kachchh to Kanniyakumari. The eastern plain lies along the Bay of Bengal.
3 · Compare the width. The western plain is narrow, 10 to 20 km. The eastern plain is wider, about 120 km.
4 · Name the parts. Western: Konkan, Karnataka coast and Malabar. Eastern: Northern Circars and Coromandel coast.
5 · Give special features. The east has deltas of the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri and Chilika lake. The west has lagoons such as Vembanad.
6 · Link to life. Both coasts grow rice, coconut and spices and support fishing and ports.
7 · Close in one line. So the east coast is broad and full of deltas, while the west coast is narrow.
Scoring tip: Use the words narrow and wide with the widths in km, and name at least one part of each coast.
