Location, size, neighbours and the political map of India sheet
3-mark answer frame

Describe the location and extent of India.

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Give the absolute location. The Indian mainland lies between 8°4′N and 37°6′N latitudes and 68°7′E and 97°25′E longitudes, wholly in the northern and eastern hemispheres.
  2. 2 · Name the key lines. The Tropic of Cancer (23°30′N) divides India into two almost equal parts. The standard meridian, 82°30′E, passes through Mirzapur.
  3. 3 · Give the extent and size. India stretches 3,214 km from north to south and 2,933 km from east to west. Its area is 3.28 million sq km, about 2.42 percent of the world's land.
  4. 4 · Add the relative location. It is the largest country of South Asia, with seas on three sides and neighbours such as Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar on land.
  5. 5 · Draw if asked. On an outline map, draw the Tropic of Cancer and the 82°30′E line, and label Mirzapur.
  6. 6 · Close in one line. So India's location gives it a central place in the Indian Ocean and one standard time.

Scoring tip: Write the four extreme values exactly, with N and E. Many learners lose marks by mixing up latitude and longitude.
