Ecosystem and its components sheet3-mark answer frameWhat is an ecosystem? Describe its components with examples, and explain the role of decomposers.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
- 1 · Define. An ecosystem is all the living organisms of an area together with the non-living parts of their environment, interacting with one another.
- 2 · Name the components.
- Biotic: producers (grass), consumers (deer, tiger), decomposers (bacteria, fungi)
- Abiotic: temperature, rainfall, wind, soil, minerals
- 3 · Explain decomposers. Bacteria and fungi break down dead remains into simple substances that return to the soil for plants to use again.
- 4 · Real life. A compost pit and a self-cleaning village pond both depend on decomposers.
- 5 · Close in one line. Biotic and abiotic parts together keep an ecosystem in balance.
Scoring tip: Give at least two examples for each group. Examples carry marks.
