Food chains, food webs and trophic levels sheet3-mark answer frameWhat is a food chain? Draw a food chain with four trophic levels and label each level. How is a food web different?
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
- 1 · Define. A food chain is a series of organisms in which each feeds on the one before it. Each step is a trophic level.
- 2 · Draw the chain. [Grass → grasshopper → frog → snake, arrows from food to eater, T1 to T4 written under each]
- 3 · Label the levels.
- T1: producer (grass)
- T2: herbivore (grasshopper)
- T3: carnivore (frog)
- T4: large carnivore (snake)
- 4 · Explain a food web. Many food chains linked together, because animals eat more than one kind of food.
- 5 · Real life. Owls and snakes eating rats in paddy fields protect the grain.
- 6 · Close in one line. Food chains and food webs show who eats whom and the path that energy takes.
Scoring tip: Arrows must point from the food to the eater. Write T1, T2, T3 and T4 under the organisms.
