The human brain and its protection sheet5-mark answer frameDraw a labelled diagram of the human brain. Describe the jobs of its three main regions.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
- 1 · Define in one line. The brain is the main coordinating centre of the body; with the spinal cord it forms the central nervous system.
- 2 · Forebrain. Main thinking part; areas for sight, hearing and smell; control of voluntary muscles; hunger centre.
- 3 · Midbrain. With the hindbrain, controls many involuntary actions.
- 4 · Hindbrain.
- Pons: a part of the hindbrain; label it in the diagram.
- Medulla: blood pressure, salivation, vomiting.
- Cerebellum: posture, balance, precise movements.
- 5 · Draw the brain. [Diagram: cerebrum, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, midbrain, pons, medulla, cerebellum, spinal cord]
- 6 · Protection and daily life. The skull and the fluid around the brain protect it, and a helmet on a two-wheeler adds one more layer.
- 7 · Close in one line. Each region has its own job, and together they control the whole body.
Scoring tip: Label the forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain as groups, then each part. Keep cerebrum and cerebellum clearly apart.
