Voluntary, involuntary and reflex actions sheet3-mark answer frameWhat is a reflex action? Draw and explain the reflex arc.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
- 1 · Define in one line. A reflex action is a sudden, automatic response to a stimulus, without the involvement of thinking.
- 2 · Give the path. Receptor → sensory neuron → relay neuron (spinal cord) → motor neuron → effector.
- 3 · Explain why it is fast. The response is made in the spinal cord; the brain is informed afterwards.
- 4 · Draw the reflex arc. [Diagram: receptor in skin, sensory neuron, spinal cord with relay neuron, motor neuron, effector muscle, arrows]
- 5 · Link to daily life. Pulling your hand away from a hot tawa protects you before you even think.
- 6 · Close in one line. Reflexes protect the body from sudden harm.
Scoring tip: Name all five parts in order and show arrows. The label spinal cord is a must.
