The female reproductive system, pregnancy and menstruation sheet
5-mark answer frame

Draw a labelled diagram of the human female reproductive system. How does the developing embryo get its nourishment?

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Open in one line. The female reproductive system makes eggs and nourishes the developing baby.
  2. 2 · Name the organs. Ovaries, oviducts, uterus, cervix and vagina, with one job each.
  3. 3 · Fertilisation and implantation. The egg meets a sperm in the oviduct; the zygote divides and implants in the thick lining of the uterus.
  4. 4 · Placenta. Villi on the embryo's side and blood spaces on the mother's side; glucose and oxygen pass in, wastes pass out.
  5. 5 · Draw the system. [Diagram: ovary, oviduct, uterus, cervix, vagina]
  6. 6 · Link to daily life. Pregnant women are advised a nutritious diet and regular check-ups, because the baby's food comes from the mother's blood.
  7. 7 · Close in one line. The embryo grows for about nine months, fed through the placenta.

Scoring tip: Write that fertilisation happens in the oviduct, not the uterus; it is a common error.
