Variation and inherited traits sheet
3-mark answer frame

How is variation created and built up during reproduction? Why is there more variation in sexual reproduction?

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Define in one line. Variation is the difference between individuals of the same kind.
  2. 2 · Asexual reproduction. Small errors in DNA copying give slight differences.
  3. 3 · Sexual reproduction. DNA from two parents mixes, giving new combinations and much more variation.
  4. 4 · Show how it builds up. [Chart: 1 → 2 → 4 → 8 individuals, each generation slightly more varied]
  5. 5 · Link to daily life. Brothers and sisters look alike but are never identical, except identical twins.
  6. 6 · Close in one line. Thus reproduction passes on the body design with small changes that add up.

Scoring tip: Mention both sources of variation: copying errors and the mixing of two parents' DNA.
