Sacred groves and Ramsar sites sheet
3-mark answer frame

What are sacred groves and Ramsar sites? Explain their role in conservation with Indian examples.

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Define sacred groves. Forest tracts set aside by communities for religious reasons, where all trees and wildlife are fully protected.
  2. 2 · Give examples. Khasi and Jaintia Hills (Meghalaya), Aravalli Hills (Rajasthan), Western Ghats of Karnataka and Maharashtra, and Sarguja, Chanda and Bastar.
  3. 3 · State their role. In situ refuges for rare and threatened plants; in Meghalaya, the last refuge for many.
  4. 4 · Define Ramsar sites. Wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention (1971, Ramsar, Iran).
  5. 5 · Name Indian Ramsar sites. For example, Chilika Lake (Odisha) and Keoladeo National Park (Rajasthan).
  6. 6 · Link to real life. Chilika supports fishing families and lakhs of winter migratory birds.
  7. 7 · Close in one line. So both protect biodiversity in situ, one through faith and one through a global treaty.

Scoring tip: Name at least two places for each. Write 'in situ' and 'Ramsar, Iran, 1971' in your answer.
