Male reproductive system and the T.S. of testis sheet
5-mark answer frame

Draw a labelled diagram of the male reproductive system. Describe the role of the testis, the accessory ducts and the accessory glands.

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Introduce in one line. The male reproductive system lies in the pelvic region and has a pair of testes, accessory ducts, accessory glands and external genitalia.
  2. 2 · Testes. In the scrotum, kept 2 to 2.5 °C cooler; about 250 lobules with seminiferous tubules lined by spermatogonia and Sertoli cells; Leydig cells between tubules make androgens.
  3. 3 · Accessory ducts. Rete testis → vasa efferentia → epididymis → vas deferens → ejaculatory duct → urethra; they store and carry sperms.
  4. 4 · Accessory glands. Seminal vesicles, prostate and bulbourethral glands; secretions form seminal plasma rich in fructose, calcium and enzymes; bulbourethral secretion lubricates the penis.
  5. 5 · Draw the system. [Diagram: urinary bladder, seminal vesicle, prostate, bulbourethral gland, vas deferens, epididymis, testis, scrotum, urethra, penis, glans penis, foreskin]
  6. 6 · Close in one line. So the testes make sperms and hormones, while the ducts and glands nourish them and deliver them as semen.

Scoring tip: Label at least eight parts, with label lines that do not cross. The diagram usually carries 2 of the 5 marks.
