Why is population stabilisation needed in India? List the features of an ideal contraceptive.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
1 · State the problem. Rapid population growth causes a shortage of basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing.
2 · Give the reasons. A fall in the death rate, MMR and IMR, and more people of reproducible age.
3 · Steps taken. Motivating small families ('Hum Do Hamare Do'), contraception, and a legal marriageable age of 18 for women and 21 for men.
4 · Features of an ideal contraceptive. User-friendly, easily available, effective, reversible, few side effects, and no interference with sexual drive or the sexual act.
5 · Close in one line. So birth control with safe, reversible methods helps stabilise the population.
Scoring tip: Write 'reversible' and 'no interference with sexual drive'. These are the two features most often missed.
