Reproductive health: need, problems and strategies sheet
3-mark answer frame

What is meant by reproductive health? List four strategies used in India to improve it.

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Define in one line. Reproductive health is total well-being in all aspects of reproduction: physical, emotional, behavioural and social (WHO).
  2. 2 · Name the programme. India began family planning in 1951; it now runs as the Reproductive and Child Health Care (RCH) programmes.
  3. 3 · List the strategies.
    • Awareness through media, parents and teachers.
    • Sex education in schools.
    • Educating couples about birth control, care of mother and child, breastfeeding and equality of boys and girls.
    • Medical facilities, a ban on sex determination by amniocentesis, immunisation, and research such as Saheli.
  4. 4 · Link to daily life. Anganwadi check-ups for pregnant mothers and immunisation drives are these strategies at work.
  5. 5 · Close in one line. So reproductive health needs awareness, services and laws working together.

Scoring tip: Quote the WHO definition with all four words: physical, emotional, behavioural, social. Missing one costs the definition mark.
