Planning and preparing a kitchen-based (blenderised) tube feed sheet
Essay frame

Prepare a kitchen-based blenderised tube feed for a stroke patient and calculate its volume, energy, protein and kcal per mL.

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Aim. To plan, prepare and calculate a blenderised feed for Mr. S (1800 kcal, 65-70 g protein).
  2. 2 · Principles.
    • Balanced; about 1 kcal/mL; about 15% of energy from protein
    • Smooth, strained, flows through the tube
    • Moderate sugar to avoid diarrhoea
    • Strict hygiene; fresh, labelled, used quickly
  3. 3 · Requirements. [Table: ingredients of Feed A and Feed B per 300 mL] Blender, fine sieve or muslin, measuring jug, 50 mL syringe, labelled flasks.
  4. 4 · Procedure.
    • Scald equipment; wash hands
    • Cook cereal, dal and vegetables soft
    • Cool, add curd, milk powder, oil, salt
    • Blend, strain, make up to 300 mL, test flow
    • Label and send at once
  5. 5 · Calculation. Feed A 295.7 kcal, 9.83 g protein; Feed B 297.2 kcal, 13.25 g; day 1778.7 kcal, 69.24 g; 1778.7 ÷ 1800 = 0.99 kcal/mL.
  6. 6 · Day plan. Feed A at 6 am, 12 noon, 6 pm; Feed B at 9 am, 3 pm, 9 pm; 300 mL each.
  7. 7 · Result. 1800 mL a day gives about 1779 kcal (0.99 kcal/mL) and 69 g protein, meeting the prescription.
  8. 8 · Precautions. Measure exactly, make fresh, no more than 2 hours at room temperature, refrigerate and use within 24 hours, serve at room temperature.

Scoring tip: Always state the final volume and the kcal per mL; a feed recipe without them loses easy marks.
