Indian food standards: voluntary and obligatory sheet
10-mark answer frame

Explain the voluntary and obligatory food standards in India.

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Open in two lines. Food standards fix the quality and safety a food must have. In India they are obligatory (by law) or voluntary (by choice, with a mark).
  2. 2 · The difference. Must vs may; minimum vs often stricter; enforced by officers vs certified by an agency.
  3. 3 · Obligatory standards.
    • PFA Act 1954 and Rules 1955.
    • Fruit Products Order 1955.
    • Meat Food Products Order 1973.
    • Milk and Milk Products Order 1992.
    • Edible oil orders.
  4. 4 · Draw the merger chart. [Chart: PFA + FPO + MFPO + MMPO + oil orders → FSS Act 2006 → FSSAI → FSS Regulations 2011]
  5. 5 · Voluntary standards.
    • AGMARK: 1937 Act, Directorate of Marketing and Inspection, grades for farm produce.
    • BIS: Indian Standards and the ISI mark.
    • Ecomark.
  6. 6 · Kitchen link. Check the FSSAI number; prefer AGMARK and ISI-marked products when buying for an institution.
  7. 7 · Close in one line. The law sets the minimum, voluntary marks add confidence, and FSSAI now unifies the system.

Scoring tip: Get the years right and draw the merger chart. A small voluntary vs obligatory table earns quick marks.
