Explain the different styles of leadership. List the qualities of a good leader.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
1 · Open in two lines. Leadership is the ability to influence people to work willingly towards goals. A leader's style is the way decisions are made and staff are guided.
2 · Draw a style line. [Line: Autocratic (leader decides) → Democratic (leader and team) → Laissez-faire (team decides)]
3 · Autocratic and democratic. Meaning, when each works, drawbacks, a kitchen example for each.
4 · Laissez-faire, paternalistic and bureaucratic. Meaning, best use and drawback of each.
5 · Qualities of a good leader.
Vision, technical knowledge, communication.
Decision-making, fairness, empathy.
Calmness, delegation, discipline, flexibility.
6 · In a real kitchen. Autocratic in the rush hour, democratic when planning menus: the good leader switches style.
7 · Close in one line. No style is best for all times; the best leader fits style to staff and situation.
Scoring tip: Put the five styles in a table with a kitchen example column; add the qualities as a neat numbered list.
