Primary and secondary data sheet5-mark answer frameDifferentiate between primary and secondary data.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
- 1 · Define both. Primary data are collected first-hand by the researcher. Secondary data were collected earlier by others and are reused.
- 2 · Draw a comparison table. [Table: point | primary | secondary: collected by, nature, cost and time, fit to problem, accuracy, example]
- 3 · Give methods and sources.
- Primary: observation, interview, questionnaire, schedule, measurement.
- Secondary: published (Census, NFHS, IFCT) and unpublished (hospital records).
- 4 · Add the precautions. Check secondary data for reliability, suitability and adequacy before use.
- 5 · Nutrition example. Your own Hb test on 100 girls is primary; NFHS-5 anaemia rates are secondary.
- 6 · Close in one line. Primary data fit best; secondary data save time. Good studies use both.
