Explain the internet and the World Wide Web, and the role of web browsers.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
1 · Open in two lines. The internet is the worldwide network of networks. The World Wide Web is a service on the internet made of linked web pages.
2 · The internet.
Millions of networks joined using TCP/IP.
ISPs connect users; each device has an IP address.
Carries email, video calls, file transfer and the web.
3 · The World Wide Web.
Web pages joined by hyperlinks, stored on web servers.
Each page has a URL and is sent by HTTP or HTTPS.
4 · Draw how a page loads. [Diagram: URL typed → DNS finds IP address → HTTP request → web server sends page → browser displays it]
5 · Web browsers. Software such as Chrome or Edge that requests pages and displays them; offers tabs, bookmarks, history, private browsing and the HTTPS padlock.
6 · Sri Lankan business example. Sri Lankan sites use .lk (cbsl.gov.lk for the Central Bank), and firms connect through ISPs such as SLT-Mobitel, Dialog and Hutch.
7 · Close in one line. The internet is the network, the web is a service on it, and the browser is the user's window to the web.
Scoring tip: State the internet vs web difference clearly in the first lines; many answers mix them up.
