Explain how managers send hidden messages through time, space and actions, and how they can avoid sending the wrong ones.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
1 · Define. Hidden messages are the unspoken meanings staff read from a manager's behaviour. This is metacommunication, mostly non-verbal and often unintended.
2 · Through time. Punctuality, waiting times and how long a manager gives to an issue show how much people and issues matter.
3 · Through space and objects. Desk position, closed or open doors, office size and layout signal distance or openness.
4 · Through actions and body language. Breaking one's own rules, checking the phone, avoiding eye contact.
5 · Through inclusion and silence. Who is invited or copied; ignoring suggestions or never praising.
6 · How to avoid wrong messages.
Seek honest feedback
Make actions match words
Be punctual
Arrange space for openness
Give full attention
Praise promptly
7 · Sri Lankan example. A factory manager who walks the floor and greets workers by name builds trust no memo can.
8 · Close. Staff believe what managers do more than what they say.
Scoring tip: A three-column table (behaviour, hidden message, better practice) is a fast way to cover many examples.
