Interviewing skills and techniques sheet
Essay frame

Explain the stages of an employment interview and the skills needed by the interviewer.

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Define. An interview is a planned two-way conversation with a purpose; an employment interview aims to select the best candidate.
  2. 2 · Mention types and formats. Selection, appraisal, disciplinary, exit; structured, unstructured, semi-structured, panel.
  3. 3 · Draw the stages. [Flow: preparation → opening → body → closing → follow-up]
  4. 4 · Explain each stage.
    • Preparation: job description, questions, venue
    • Opening: rapport, purpose
    • Body: questions, listening, notes
    • Closing: candidate's questions, next steps
    • Follow-up: evaluate, decide, inform
  5. 5 · Interviewer's skills.
    • Open and probing questions
    • Listen more than talk
    • Take notes
    • Same criteria for all
    • Avoid bias and personal questions
  6. 6 · Common mistakes. Halo effect, first-impression bias, leading questions, talking too much.
  7. 7 · Sri Lankan example. A bank's panel interview with a marking sheet so every candidate is judged on the same points.
  8. 8 · Close. A well-run interview is fair to candidates and protects the firm from costly wrong hires.

Scoring tip: Draw the five stages as a flow first, then fill in each stage. Mentioning the halo effect shows depth.
