Communication in teams sheetEssay frameDiscuss the stages of team development and the communication needed at each stage.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
- 1 · Define a team. A small group with a common goal and joint responsibility; it differs from a group, whose members may pursue their own goals.
- 2 · Draw Tuckman's stages. [Flow: forming → storming → norming → performing → adjourning]
- 3 · Explain each stage with its communication need.
- Forming: leader gives clear goals and roles
- Storming: active listening, respectful conflict
- Norming: agree rules for meetings and decisions
- Performing: open sharing, quick feedback
- Adjourning: review lessons, recognise effort
- 4 · Effective team communication. Shared goals, clear roles, open information, active listening, constructive conflict, trust.
- 5 · Team roles. Task, relationship (maintenance) and self-centred roles.
- 6 · Groupthink. Explain it and its cure: leader speaks last, devil's advocate, outside views.
- 7 · Sri Lankan example. Junior members who stay silent out of respect for seniors are asked to speak first.
Scoring tip: The stage-by-stage table (stage, what happens, communication needed) is the heart of this answer.
