Explain the concept of management and the micro and macro environment of the family.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
1 · Open in two lines. Management is a goal-directed mental process of using limited resources wisely. Home management applies it to the family.
2 · Give two definitions.
Nickell and Dorsey: planning, controlling and evaluating the use of family resources to achieve family goals.
Gross and Crandall: a series of decisions making up the process of using family resources to reach family goals.
3 · Explain the concept.
Goal-directed and mental.
Uses limited resources and is built on decisions.
Continuous, dynamic and universal.
4 · Micro environment. The near environment: house, family members, relatives, neighbours, equipment. The family can shape it. Example: rearranging a small kitchen.
5 · Macro environment. The larger environment: natural, economic, social-cultural, political-legal and technological. The family must adapt. Example: planning for a price rise or a water shortage.
6 · Draw a simple figure. [Diagram: the family at the centre, a ring for the micro environment around it, and an outer ring for the macro environment]
7 · Nutrition link. A diet plan must suit both the patient's home (micro) and food prices and ration supply (macro).
8 · Close in one line. Good management uses what the near environment offers and adapts to the larger one to reach family goals.
Scoring tip: Two named definitions and a micro/macro table with one home example each earn most of the marks.
