National programmes against anaemia, vitamin A deficiency and IDD sheet
10-mark answer frame

Describe the national programmes for the prevention of anaemia, vitamin A deficiency and iodine deficiency disorders.

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Open in two lines. Micronutrient deficiencies (hidden hunger) are tackled by three national programmes: Anemia Mukt Bharat, vitamin A prophylaxis and NIDDCP.
  2. 2 · Draw the summary table. [Table: problem, programme and year, main strategy]
  3. 3 · Anemia Mukt Bharat.
    • 2018; the 6 × 6 × 6 strategy.
    • IFA by age group with colour codes.
    • Deworming, testing and treatment, fortified foods, behaviour change.
  4. 4 · Vitamin A prophylaxis. 1970; 1 lakh IU at 9 months, then 2 lakh IU every 6 months to 5 years: 9 doses.
  5. 5 · NIDDCP. NGCP 1962 renamed 1992; survey, iodised salt, resurvey, laboratory monitoring, education; 30 and 15 ppm.
  6. 6 · Problems. Poor IFA compliance and side effects, supply gaps, low awareness, non-iodised salt still sold in some markets.
  7. 7 · In the community. Weekly IFA days in schools, deworming days, salt testing and diet education.
  8. 8 · Close in one line. Supplements give quick results; diet, fortification and education make them last.

Scoring tip: Give each programme its launch year and one strategy line; the IFA colour table is a quick, scoring addition.
