Rabbit: respiratory and circulatory systems sheet
7-mark answer frame

Describe the respiratory system of the rabbit with a labelled diagram.

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Open in one line. The rabbit breathes air through a pair of lungs in the thoracic cavity, helped by the diaphragm.
  2. 2 · Draw and label. [Larynx, trachea with cartilage rings, bronchi, lungs, bronchioles, alveoli, pleura, diaphragm]
  3. 3 · Air passages. External nostrils → nasal chambers → pharynx → glottis (guarded by the epiglottis) → larynx → trachea with C-shaped rings → two bronchi.
  4. 4 · Lungs. Spongy and covered by the pleura; the bronchi branch into bronchioles that end in alveoli, where O₂ and CO₂ are exchanged with the capillaries.
  5. 5 · Mechanism of breathing.
    • Inspiration: the diaphragm contracts and flattens, the ribs lift, and air enters.
    • Expiration: the diaphragm and intercostal muscles relax, and air leaves.
  6. 6 · Real life. We breathe the same way; a hiccup is a sudden jerk of the diaphragm.
  7. 7 · Close in one line. So the rabbit's lungs and diaphragm give it a steady supply of oxygen.

Scoring tip: Write the path of air as one arrow chain; it is quick and earns the marks for the air passages.
