Energy: renewable and non-renewable sources; conserving energy sheet
7-mark answer frame

What are renewable sources of energy? Explain any three, and write the ways to conserve energy.

How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.

  1. 1 · Define. Renewable energy comes from sources that nature replaces: sun, wind, water, biomass. Non-renewable sources are coal, petroleum and natural gas.
  2. 2 · Solar energy. Solar panels and water heaters; the Kamuthi solar park.
  3. 3 · Wind energy. Windmills turn generators; the Muppandal wind farms.
  4. 4 · Biogas. Dung rots without air in a digester, giving methane fuel and slurry manure.
  5. 5 · Why prefer renewables. They never run out and give little pollution or CO₂.
  6. 6 · Conserving energy.
    • Switch off when not in use
    • LED bulbs and BEE star appliances
    • Public transport and cycling
    • Pressure cookers and solar heaters
  7. 7 · Link to daily life. An LED bulb in place of a 60 W bulb saves units on the family's electricity bill.
  8. 8 · Close in one line. Saving energy and using renewables protects both resources and climate.

Scoring tip: Give a Tamil Nadu example for each source. Examiners like it.
