One card is drawn from a well-shuffled pack of 52 cards. Find the probability of getting (i) a red king, (ii) a face card, (iii) a card that is neither a heart nor a king.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
1 · Write what is given and what is to be found. One card from 52 well-shuffled cards. To find: P(red king), P(face card), P(neither a heart nor a king).
2 · Write the formula. P(E) = favourable outcomes ÷ total outcomes. Total = 52.
3 · Count the favourable cards.
Red kings: king of hearts and king of diamonds (2).
Face cards: 4 kings + 4 queens + 4 jacks = 12.
Hearts or kings: 13 hearts + 3 other kings = 16, so neither = 52 − 16 = 36.
4 · Work out each probability.
P(red king) = 2/52 = 1/26.
P(face card) = 12/52 = 3/13.
P(neither a heart nor a king) = 36/52 = 9/13.
5 · Check and box the answer. The king of hearts was counted only once. Box all three answers.
Scoring tip: When two groups overlap, like hearts and kings, count the shared card once and say so in a line.
