The communication process sheetEssay frameExplain the communication process with a neat diagram.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
- 1 · Define communication. Communication is the process of sharing meaning between a sender and a receiver so that both reach a common understanding.
- 2 · Draw the loop. [Diagram: sender → encoding → channel → receiver → decoding → feedback → back to sender; write ‘noise’ in the centre]
- 3 · Explain each stage.
- Idea: the sender decides what to say and why.
- Encoding: the idea becomes words or symbols.
- Channel: letter, email, call or meeting.
- Receiving and decoding: the receiver works out the meaning.
- Feedback: the receiver responds.
- 4 · Explain noise. Noise is any disturbance, e.g. a weak signal (technical), jargon (semantic) or anger (psychological).
- 5 · One-way and two-way. Without feedback the process is one-way and errors go unseen. Feedback makes it two-way and accurate.
- 6 · Business example. A branch manager's WhatsApp instruction, where a missing reply shows him that one staff member did not get the message.
- 7 · Close in one line. Feedback turns a line into a loop and makes communication complete.
Scoring tip: The diagram carries many of the marks. Draw it large, label every arrow, and put noise in the middle.
