Methods of resolving conflicts sheet10-mark answer frameExplain the methods of resolving conflicts in a family.
How to lay out the answer. Follow the frame, then write it in your own words.
- 1 · Open in two lines. A conflict is a clash of wants, values or goals between family members. It must be resolved for the family to work together.
- 2 · Causes, briefly.
- Differing values, goals and standards.
- Scarce resources.
- Generation gap, role confusion and poor communication.
- 3 · Consensus. All members discuss until they fully agree. Most satisfying and lasting. Example: choosing a holiday spot together.
- 4 · Accommodation.
- Compromise: each side gives up part of its wish.
- Bargaining: one wish traded for another.
- Coercion: a powerful member forces the decision.
- 5 · De facto decision. No one decides; events or delay decide by default. Least satisfying.
- 6 · Good practice. Family discussion, facts before arguments, taking turns, an elder as mediator.
- 7 · Nutrition link. A dietitian helps a family agree on one shared low-salt menu instead of quarrelling over food.
- 8 · Close in one line. Aim for consensus, accept fair compromise, and avoid coercion and drifting into de facto decisions.
Scoring tip: Rank the methods from best (consensus) to worst (de facto). A short table with one family example each saves time.
