Eat Right India and the Fit India Movement
Eat Right India (FSSAI, 2018) promotes safe, healthy and sustainable food; the Fit India Movement (2019) makes daily physical activity a habit. Together they fight NCDs.
Eat Right India: the three pillars
| Pillar | Focus | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Eat Safe | Hygiene and safety across the food chain | Clean Street Food Hubs, hygiene rating of eateries, fighting adulteration, home tests |
| Eat Healthy | Diet diversity; less salt, sugar and fat; no industrial trans fat; fortified staples | 'Aaj Se Thoda Kam' campaign, +F foods, trans-fat-free drive |
| Eat Sustainable | Local and seasonal foods; less food waste; safe packaging | Save Food Share Food, RUCO, promoting millets |
Eat Right India: how it works
- A systems approach: works with food businesses (the supply side) and citizens (the demand side) together.
- Settings-based programmes: Eat Right School, Eat Right Campus (colleges, offices, hospitals), Eat Right Station, clean and fresh fruit and vegetable markets, Clean Street Food Hubs.
- Eat Right Challenge for districts and cities, and Eat Right Melas for the public.
- Convergence with POSHAN Abhiyaan, Ayushman Bharat, Swachh Bharat Mission and Fit India.
- Supported by NetProFaN professionals and the states' food safety departments.
Fit India Movement
- Launched by the Prime Minister on 29 August 2019, National Sports Day, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
- Aim: make fitness part of daily life and a people's movement, to cut lifestyle diseases.
- Fit India School certification (flag, three-star and five-star) for schools that give time and space to physical activity.
- Fit India Freedom Run, Plog Run (jogging while picking up litter), cyclothons and the Fit India Quiz.
- Age-appropriate fitness protocols for children, adults and older people.
- Message 'Fitness ka Dose, Aadha Ghanta Roz': half an hour of fitness every day.
- The Fit India app for tracking activity and fitness tests.
Eat Right India vs Fit India
Obesity, diabetes and heart disease come from too much energy in and too little energy out, so both are needed together: eat right and get fit.
A college can take its campus through Eat Right Campus certification and Fit India activities together: a healthier canteen menu with millets and fruit, clear menu labels, and a daily 30-minute walk or yoga session.
