Sustainable development
Sustainable development meets today's needs without harming the ability of future generations to meet theirs. It balances economy, society and environment.
What is sustainable development?
Development means better living: food, homes, roads, jobs, schools and hospitals. But if forests, water and fuels are used up, future people will suffer. Sustainable development is growth that meets our needs today without harming the ability of future generations to meet theirs. The idea was made popular by the Brundtland Report, 'Our Common Future' (1987).
Three pillars of sustainable development
| Pillar | Means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Economic | Growth, jobs and income | Small industries that use local resources wisely |
| Social | A fair share for all: food, health, education, equality | Safe water and toilets for every home |
| Environmental | Protecting air, water, soil, forests and wildlife | Renewable energy and tree planting |
How to achieve sustainable development
- Use more renewable energy: solar, wind and biogas.
- Practise the 3 Rs and segregate waste.
- Conserve water through rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation.
- Use organic farming and crop rotation, with fewer chemicals.
- Plant trees and protect biodiversity.
- Use public transport, cycles and fuel-efficient vehicles.
- Spread awareness and environmental education.
Unsustainable vs sustainable practices
Every year Tamil Nadu's east coast observes a fishing ban season while fish breed, so there will be fish in the future. Choosing seasonal, local food like millets also saves water and transport fuel.
2 marks: “Define sustainable development.” Development that meets the needs of the present without harming the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
4 marks: “Explain the ways to achieve sustainable development.” Define; three pillars; renewable energy, 3 Rs, water conservation, organic farming, afforestation, public transport, awareness; one Tamil Nadu example such as the fishing ban season.
Use today, save for tomorrow: people, planet and income in balance.
