Digital initiatives in higher education
India's digital push in higher education runs on a few platforms: SWAYAM for courses, SWAYAM Prabha for TV, and INFLIBNET services such as Shodhganga for theses.
SWAYAMStudy Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (2017)
SWAYAM PrabhaFree educational DTH channels via GSAT-15
ShodhgangaRepository of Indian PhD theses (INFLIBNET)
Umbrella schemeNMEICT, launched 2009
The main platforms
| Initiative | What it is | Run by |
|---|---|---|
| SWAYAM | Free online courses (MOOCs) from school to postgraduate level; credits can be transferred to a degree | Ministry of Education, with national coordinators such as NPTEL, UGC, CEC, IGNOU and AICTE |
| SWAYAM Prabha | 24×7 free educational TV channels on DTH, using the GSAT-15 satellite; began with 32 channels | Ministry of Education; uplinked from BISAG-N, Gandhinagar |
| NPTEL | Online courses in engineering, science and humanities, with proctored certification exams | IITs and IISc |
| National Digital Library of India (NDLI) | Single-window search across millions of learning resources | IIT Kharagpur, for the Ministry of Education |
| e-PG Pathshala | Free e-content for postgraduate subjects, built in four quadrants | UGC, executed by INFLIBNET |
| Shodhganga | Open repository of Indian PhD theses | INFLIBNET |
| INFLIBNET Centre | Library-networking hub for universities; runs Shodhganga, e-ShodhSindhu and ShodhShuddhi | Autonomous Inter-University Centre of UGC, Gandhinagar |
| Virtual Labs | Remote and simulation-based laboratory experiments in science and engineering | Coordinated by IIT Delhi with partner institutes |
The four quadrants of a SWAYAM course
Quadrant 1: e-TutorialVideo lectures by the course teacher.
Quadrant 2: e-ContentReading material that can be downloaded or printed.
Quadrant 3: Self-assessmentQuizzes and assignments to test learning.
Quadrant 4: Discussion forumOnline forum to raise and clear doubts.
INFLIBNET's Shodh family
- Shodhganga: full-text PhD theses.
- Shodhgangotri: synopses of research proposals, submitted at registration.
- ShodhShuddhi: plagiarism-detection service for universities.
- e-ShodhSindhu: consortium giving institutions access to e-journals and databases.
- Vidwan: database of experts and researchers.
Other initiatives worth knowing
- NMEICT (National Mission on Education through ICT, 2009): the umbrella under which many of these platforms were built.
- National Academic Depository (NAD): digital store of degrees and mark sheets, accessed through DigiLocker.
- Academic Bank of Credits (ABC): stores credits earned, supporting multiple entry and exit under NEP 2020.
- Spoken Tutorial and e-Yantra (both IIT Bombay): software training by audio-video tutorials; robotics education.
How NET asks this: match each platform with its purpose or host (Shodhganga-theses, NDLI-IIT Kharagpur, Virtual Labs-remote experiments), or expand SWAYAM.
Typical MCQ: “Which INFLIBNET service stores Indian PhD theses?” Shodhganga. Shodhgangotri holds the synopses.
Typical MCQ: “What are the four quadrants of a SWAYAM course?” Video lectures, reading material, self-assessment and a discussion forum.
Shodhganga is the river of finished theses; Shodhgangotri, its source, holds the synopses where research begins.
